MultiPart

Participatory approach to improve health and well-being in anthropogenically affected environments

MultiPart (ARIS J7-60123) is a participatory research project in Slovenia that brings scientists, local residents, NGOs, industry, and public authorities together to improve health and well-being in communities affected by industrial activity. Its vision is a healthier, fairer living environment built on transparent evidence and shared decision-making.

The project focuses on the lower Soča region—especially the area around Anhovo, where the impacts of cement production have long been debated—and is funded under ARIS. MultiPart’s approach is practical and community-centred: it maps key stakeholders; holds an initial workshop in Kanal ob Soči to refine local research questions; conducts an anonymous population survey on environment, health and trust; and concludes with a public workshop to present results and co-define actions.

Methodologically, MultiPart combines environmental monitoring and exposure assessment with social-science tools to link emissions, local conditions, and potential human impacts. Throughout, the team prioritizes openness (plain-language communication, accessible data) and measures trust in the research process and between stakeholders—so findings can guide concrete improvements rather than remain academic.

Work is organized into clear work packages and delivered by a consortium of Slovenian partners with expertise in environmental science, public health, and engagement. The outcome is a shared, evidence-based basis for decisions that reduce risks, improve environmental quality, and strengthen public confidence—locally first, and with methods designed to be replicated elsewhere.
